Mammatus clouds form when moist "juicy" air is thrown up into the stratosphere and out over bone-dry layers of air by a thunderstorm. When the storm passes, the air freezes and falls, forming these seemingly upside-down-looking clouds. Here, as the sky clears to the west, sunset lights the underside of the retreating cloud deck.
